Student success is the main focus of the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE). This is not an academic metric that is confined to class instruction, advising, or computing facilities but is broader in scope to include professional skills and social well-being. The department takes pride in offering ample opportunities for its students to pursue personal development and career advancement. We also strive to create a community that values diversity, equity and inclusiveness.
CSEE pursues numerous means to achieve these objectives. Examples include: (i) organizing hackUMBC, an exploration hackathon that attracts over 1500 high school undergraduate students from across the state of Maryland, (ii) coaching our CyberDAWGS as they compete at the national level, (iii) establishing a CSEE research day and lightning talks in the spring and fall semesters to showcase significant accomplishments and enrich the student experience through presentation and interaction in a conference setting; (iv) sponsoring various students’ clubs such as ACM, Retriever Robotics, etc.; (v) organizing alumni visits to share experience and provide advice to students; (vi) supporting talent recruitment by hosting selective candidates for on-campus visits. That is not all; more initiatives are in the pipeline, such as offering graduate fellowships, student travel grants, study abroad, etc.
Doubtlessly, these initiatives and sponsored events demand significant financial resources. The generous support of the UMBC community has been instrumental to offering the aforementioned opportunities. We hope that continual and expanded support will enable us to scale up as we seek to support our large increase in enrollment. CSEE has been experiencing major growth with enrollment more than doubling over the past five years to where we are currently serving over 3,000 graduate and undergraduate students.
At the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at UMBC, we are deeply invested in the well-being and success of our students. Inside and outside the classroom we pursue transformation through exploration; encouraging our students to actively seek new information, experiences, and perspectives. The department strives to make sure our students have the resources to prepare them for greater success.
Please consider making a gift to our department to help us enrich the experience of our CSEE students.

All contributions are administered by the UMBC Foundation, Inc., for the benefit of UMBC.
